From: Laurie Rasmussen Posted: Oct. 29, 2006 Saturday, November 18, 2006 HARP WORKSHOPS
1:00-2:30 - IRISH SLOW AIRS with Grainne Hambly A simple song air will be taught by ear, with discussion and demonstration of appropriate ornamentation and ideas for arranging slow airs. No written music is provided for this workshop, so a recording device is highly recommended.
3:00-4:30 - COMPOSING IN A TRADITIONAL STYLE with William Jackson What makes a new composition sound traditional? This is a comprehensive look at the structure of traditional music and the modes and rhythms used from Gaelic song, strathspeys to jigs and reels. Learn how to use a simple chord progression as the basis for developing melodic ideas and then expand these melodic ideas into a larger work.
Come and learn from the masters of Celtic harp! Cost is $30 for one workshop or $50 for both. Workshops will be held in Montecito and space is limited to 12 harpers so reply to this email immediately to sign up.

Hello Harp Friends!
I'd like to alert you to some exciting Harp Happenings that are taking place right here in our neighborhood. Don't miss out on these great events:
Saturday, November 18, 2006 - 8 pm Two Sides of Celtic - Grainne Hambly and Billy Jackson Quite simply, Gráinne Hambly and William Jackson are two of the foremost harpers of Ireland and Scotland. They are now combining their extraordinary talents and touring together as The Masters of the Celtic Harp, a well-deserved moniker. Besides performing solo on the tour, they will also be playing together: two harps, concertina, tinwhistle and mandola. Two great players; one fantastic show. Zoey's Cafe 451 E. Main St. Ventura, CA (805) 652-1137
Sat. November 18 - WORKSHOPS with Grainne Hambly (Irish) and Billy Jackson (Scottish) Last year when Grainne was in town many of you attended her excellent concert at Santa Barbara City College and 10 of you took her workshop. Those people are still talking about how helpful it was to learn Irish tunes by ear. Grainne and Billy can both teach a workshop on Sat. November 18th before the concert but we need somebody to host it (I would do it but I have a gig that day). If you have a space, either in Santa Barbara or Ventura, and would be willing to host 10 or 12 harpers for an Irish or Scottish style workshop PLEASE LET ME KNOW ASAP!
